The Illusion of Time

“The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.” -Albert Einstein

Little Gems of Wisdom & Fun from Mary Lynn Ziemer
Do you ever feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day? Or, feel like time is slipping by too quickly?
What if there were another way to experience time?
Albert Einstein completely changed our understanding of time. His theory of relativity showed that time isn't the fixed, universal thing we tend to imagine it is. And shortly before his death, Einstein wrote something remarkably profound about the nature of time. He wrote...
“The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”
Think about that for a moment.
Past. Present. Future.
We experience them as three separate things. But the past is something we remember, and the future is something we imagine. The only moment we can actually experience is this one.
Right now.
And that makes now incredibly powerful.
Because this is the moment in which you get to decide what you're thinking, what you're feeling, what you're focusing on, and how you're going to experience your life.
You don't have to wait for the weekend. You don't have to wait until the project is finished.
You don't have to wait until you have more money, more time, fewer responsibilities, or everything finally falls into place.
Joy is available now.
So, how do we stop racing the clock, and overcome that "stubbornly persistent illusion" that is "time"?
1. Get quiet and find your calm.
Before you begin your day, give yourself a few minutes of stillness. Put down your phone. Take a few deep breaths. Let your mind settle.
Then choose the thoughts you want to carry with you. For example:
"I am so grateful that I have more than enough time to get everything done in an easy and relaxed manner."
“I am calm and effective as I move through my day.” I have an abundance of time to do whatever I want and I always have fun doing it."
Write your favorite statement down. Saying it is helpful. Writing it is even more powerful. It makes it an action, and gives your mind something intentional to focus on.
2. Change the way you think about time.
Have you ever noticed how quickly an hour can disappear when you're having fun? And how slowly five minutes can feel when you're anxious?
The clock hasn't changed. Your experience has.
So instead of imagining yourself racing through your day, visualize yourself moving through it with ease and efficiency.
Visualize yourself with a smile on your face, getting it all done, and feeling great about it. See yourself calmly focused on one thing at a time.
You may be surprised by how much more enjoyable and productive your day becomes!
3. Come back to now.
This is perhaps the simplest and most powerful practice of all.
When you're talking to someone, really listen. When you're eating, taste your food. When you're outside, notice the sky and the beauty around you.
Be thankful for everyone and everything around you!
When something wonderful happens, let yourself fully experience it.
We miss so much of our lives because we're mentally somewhere else. We're replaying yesterday or worrying about tomorrow. We're planning the next thing.
Meanwhile, our actual life is happening right here, right now!
Take a breath.
Look around.
Notice what's good.
When you feel good emotionally, that’s how you know you are truly living in the present moment. Because when you begin experiencing more of the moments you already have, something beautiful happens:
You discover that a joyful life isn't waiting for you somewhere in the future.
It's happening now.
At the end of your magnificent day, think about how grateful you are for this new kind of day you are experiencing. When you do this, you will have more and more days that truly feel like you are living a magical, amazing life of joy.
Wishing you an absolutely magical week full of love, gratitude and fun, fun, FUN!
