Practice Kind Acts... Change the World

“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” – Bob Kerrey

Little Gems of Wisdom & Fun from Mary Lynn Ziemer

There is a song that says, "What the world needs now, is love sweet love. No, not just for some but for everyone." It may sound like it's oversimplifying things, but it's truly not. It really is that simple... because love and kindness are the most powerful things on earth. A wonderful way to impact the world right now in a way to inspire positive change is to practice acts of kindness. They can be intended or random. They are simply gestures of kindness to brighten someone’s day and spread more love.

There has been extraordinary research exploring the role of social networks in shaping our behavior. This research has proven that much of our behavior is literally contagious. Studies show that our attitudes and actions not only impact the people we interact with directly, but that each individual’s influence actually extends to people up to at least 3 degrees. While this may not sound like much, the influence adds up. Researchers estimate that there are nearly 1,000 people within 3 degrees of most of us. So, when you consciously choose to think, speak, and act in positive and happier ways, you are unconsciously shaping the behavior of an incredible number of people in the same way!

How will you know when your love tank is "overflowing"? You'll know because you will act without expecting anything in return. The only thing you'll need are those wonderful warm and fuzzy feelings you get when someone feels your love, when you've put a smile on their face and a glow in their heart. And then, a funny thing happens... you’ll receive so much love in return.

To help you get started here are a few acts of kindness for you to try out.

1. Appreciate someone today.

A little recognition can make a world of difference in someone’s life. Right now, pick up your phone, or open your email or text, and contact just one person today. Let them know that you are grateful for them and that you appreciate having them in your life. Share something specific with them that they have done or a positive quality that you are thankful for. It is so simple to do, yet the ripple effect is far reaching.

Now, do it again tomorrow, and keep going every day after. Get out of your comfort zone and begin to deepen your relationships in the process. Imagine how wonderful you will feel and the many lives you will touch if you make this a habit every day!

2. Smile at all the strangers you see today.

By simply smiling, you are passing along the greatest contagion… joy! Mirror neurons in your brain cause you to yawn if you see someone else yawn. It works the same way with a smile. The mirror neurons light up, you smile, and your happiness level rises.

Even just one sincere smile can make a truly amazing, positive difference in someone’s day. Without saying a word, you are letting that person know that you see them and that they matter. Plus, studies prove that the physical act of smiling, evokes feelings of happiness in you too.

(Even in situations where people are wearing face masks, you can still see smiling eyes. Or, even a little friendly wave and head nod can help brighten someone's day.)

3. Remember to reach out to those you know who might need extra support during these times

During times like these, it’s important to check in with our friends, extended family, clients and colleagues who may need extra support or may be directly feeling the impacts of the recent events more strongly. Everyone is unique in how they experience the current events of the world going on around them, so being extra loving and kind by placing a call or paying them a visit, and offering to help can go a long way.  How we respond to situations around us, in the moment we are living it, determines how our world unfolds in the next.  So, be proactive in helping and respond with love. Erin M. Moss, LMHC, in her recent Mind Body Green post said,  "The fear of saying the wrong thing has become a reason to hold back… Now is the time to put those fears aside.”

Change in our world starts with each one of us thinking, speaking and acting from our hearts more than ever before. So, start somewhere, anywhere.  Just take one step in that direction which brings you peace.  Do something that addresses the issues coming from a place of love.  To begin with,  each of us has the ability to send love to the world at large for equality, harmony and peace; to our leaders for wisdom, compassion, loving words and actions; and to ourselves for deep awareness that we are all one and the same.  We are one humanity!

Now, just feel more love and kindness than ever before for everyone, everything, and for yourself. Then, watch as you impact our world in unimaginable ways!

Have an absolutely magical week full of love, gratitude, and fun, fun, FUN!
